Treatment is a multi-step process that takes place over a series of sessions. Each step will be described thoroughly before and during it’s occurrence.
Referral:
Referrals can be made by a physician, a teacher, counselor, or yourself. However we are found, once you contact us with the desire to have yourself or your loved one benefit from Music Therapy, we’ve begun. You will be asked to fill out an intake form with questions that help us structure the assessment, and to schedule a time for the music therapy assessment.Assessment:
A functional assessment of the clients strengths and needs is performed across multiple in the areas of: communication, academics, motor, music, emotional, sensory, and social. The assessment can include a music therapy session, interviews with caregivers, and consultation with other professionals involved in treatment. After the assessment is complete, results will be reviewed and the non-musical treatment goals and objectives will be set.Treatment:
The music therapist will design music based interventions to target the objectives and goals set during the assessment. These interventions may include: singing, playing instruments, improvisation, song writing and composition, musical games, movement activities, lyric analysis, or adaptive music lessons. During treatment, as objectives are met, music will slowly be decreased to aid in generalization of skills. The music therapist will be willing to work closely with members of the interdisciplinary treatment team to provide comprehensive treatment.Evaluation:
This includes continuous collection of data by the therapist which is reviewed with you each month. At the end of the treatment period ( Fall, Spring, or summer), the entire period’s progress shall be reviewed and goals and objectives shall be changes or renewed.
The treatment process of each individual is different, and the amount of time involved may vary. A client seen for a longer duration of treatment will have a more formal treatment process as compared to a client being seen only once. Treatment can take place in an individual or group setting.
